I casually mentioned "House Work" and the roof in this post. I failed to mention we planned on having other work done soon as well (could have sworn I mentioned it somewhere, but can't find it).
Anyway,
part of the other work was to get 4 windows and the slider replaced also. All have been the victim of time and weather (and bad preservatives) and are shot. We originally planned on getting them replaced back in Nov./Dec. after the refinancing was done on the house. Had the estimates all done and just waiting on getting started.
Well, it started.
The contractor we've used for years called and said they would be out this past Monday to get the slider in. And depending on how the weather went, maybe get a couple windows replaced this week as well. They did indeed come out Monday and installed the slider. Only one problem, it opens on the wrong side. Seems the person (no longer with the company) who came out and took the original measurements was standing on the wrong side of the door when filling out the paperwork. So they reversed the orientation on the opening.
When I got home, the crew had the door in and were finishing up on it. I was looking at it when the lead of the group (I like this guys work and we waited till he was available to do the whole job) asked if I liked the door.
Me: Looks great. But it opens on the wrong side.
He: I was hoping you wouldn't notice that.
M: I did. Can you swap panels?
H: Umm, no. You'll need to call the boss. We noticed it when we were putting it in, but by then, the old door wasn't going back in. (the look he gave me explained that comment) At least for now, the hole in the wall is closed up and sealed with a pretty, new, backward door.
He had a point. The door looked good and the wall was sealed. Just opens on the wrong side. So, I called the boss and left a message. He called me back the next morning and said he was going to contact the maker to see if the panels could be switched and he would get back with me that afternoon.
He called me back, and explained the cause of the issue, then told me the panels could not be switched. He already ordered a new door and when it showed up, they would switch them out. In the meantime, enjoy the warmth the new door brought.
I have to admit, the new door doesn't leak air like the old one did. So that is a plus. And, I know when the new door shows up, he will be good to his word and the doors will get switched.
And, weather permitting, 2 of the 4 windows may get put in tomorrow. Not sure THAT is going to happen with all the snow on the ground (we got 7 - 9 inches on Wed.), so I won't be surprised if that gets put off till next week when it is supposed to be in the 60's.
Still, it's a nice door. Too bad you have to step on the floor vent to go in or out.
Inverse happens.
What a PITA.
Hope the new door comes in soon so you can go out the right way. Just glad the upside is that it is non-drafty so you can live with it for now.
