We are in the third show of the season for Music Theater and I haven't mentioned it yet.
What was I thinking?
Anyway, I am here now mentioning it.
The first presentation was "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". It was excellent. For so few people actually in the presentation, they made it seem as though the stage was full all the time. And they did a terrific job of it. Timing for both the verbal humor, and the sight gags, were tight.
And the visual gags happening behind the main action were to die laughing for. And subtle...WOW! A raised eyebrow here, a twisted smile there, a look of shock or confusion elsewhere, all filled in (what the audience knew to be obvious) little quirks being delivered.
But then, the main character Prologus, told us from the start, "this is a play. A play about...". And all the way through, his actions were meant to remind us, "this is a play". And he presented this information to the audience in the fashion of, "this is a play, so bear with us while we work it out." As if they were still rehearsing it and unsure if it would float.
Still, it was funny when the three actors that played several roles were asked to play two roles at the same time. The sudden stop to action, and confused looks on most everyones faces caused Prologus to come to the conclusion, "We don't really need the Eunuchs right now, do we?", and allowed them to leave the stage, only to reappear seconds later in their "other" roles.
Dudette and I were very happy. We laughed ourselves sore.
I'll tell you about the other two tomorrow. Right now, I have to get ready. It's show time.
Big River happens. (tonight)
Sounds great! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
