The other night, I was out in the garage...minding my own business, of course. When I heard this noise...
sounded strange. All I could think of is, "what are the crazy neighbors up to this time?"
It was an awkward, heavy footed sound followed by a dragging noise.
"GALUMPH...schl-o-o-r-k, galumph...schl-o-o-r-k, galumph...schl-o-o-r-k..."
I turned off the light in the garage and went to the door and stood there. As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I expected to see one of our local loonies moving something heavy.
There was no one out there. And no noise. Hmmmmm...
Then it started up again, just as I was turning away. I looked and looked and saw nothing. But, the noise continued.
About the time I was ready to consider questioning my own sanity (others have been handling that for me for years), I noticed water flowing into the street from across the street.
Our FREAK neighbor number two, not to be confused with Freak #1, the one who washes his trees, had a rather strange curve in his sump pump hose leading to the street. Every time his sump went off, it kept surging through the hose. The surge and back wash was causing the hose to make the noise.
Now that'll make you swear off chocolate covered jalapenos before bed.
But listening to it, all I could think of was the old horror movies where the hunch-backed assistant was dragging a dead body from a grave. You know the ones...club footed grunt schlepping a canvas bag with spare body parts back to the castle. I kept waiting for strange conversation with a British accent:
(voice of RiffRaff) "Yesss Mah-stah, I'm coming. EE-Gor has the boda pahrts yer need." galumph...schl-o-o-r-k.
(Christopher Lee) "Well, hurry it up, man. The castle is just ahead." galumph...schl-o-o-r-k.
A very peculiar sound on a dark and cloudy night. Like howling should have accompanied the whole affair.
Weirdness happens.
