Had a knock at the door today. When I answered, there was a truck in the drive, and the guy standing at the door said he was with "ABC Roofing" and that "Jack" told him to stop by and fix a couple shingles that had blown off.
Now, I had just woken up (working the night shift will do that to you) and was still a bit fuzzy. After about three blinks to process his comment, the guy realized he was talking to a zombie. So he helped fill in the gaps.
He said, "'Jack' had been in the neighborhood on another project and noticed you had lost some shingles from the storm the other day. Since "Jack" did work for you before, he knew you and the house. He told me to stop by when I finished the other house and fix them."
Oooo-kaaay...I know "Jack". (that sounds funny) He has done work for us before, and did a good job.
The guy continued, pulling out a bunch of papers (with the company letterhead and all) that had photos of the lost shingles (I knew about one of them so I knew the pics were legit). The papers had our address and name on them, and written instructions with the photos. "'Jack' said you have extra shingles so there wouldn't be a problem with the color match. (I do) So he told me to stop by and get them fixed."
"I'll get the ladder set up, and if you'll show me where to get the shingles, I'll get this done and be on my way."
So, he did, and I did. And he was up to the roof in no time. And just as quickly, I called "Jack" up to verify the worker.
The second thing out of "Jack's" mouth was, "It's free. No charge." He knew why I was calling and confirmed the whole thing. He figured that even if we didn't have any shingles left, the "other" job used the same shingles so there shouldn't have been a color problem. He told his man to take care of it.
"Jack" has done several little jobs for us in the past, nothing to make us stand out I'm sure. And for as big as the company he works for is, he probably deals with dozens of customers a week. I think the last time he was out for anything, was a couple years back. Yet, he remembered us, checked up while in the area, noticed a problem, and sent a man out to fix it.
The last time we had him out, we asked on how long it would be before we were looking at having to re-roof. By his estimates, we still have a number of years before we are looking at having that done. So, this wasn't a pitch for a new roof.
Something tells me, when the time does come for a new roof, we already know who we're calling.
