Started a new game last night; Half life. It took a long time to load up on the computer...
and after it had loaded, it had me register it. After that part of the routine, I noticed it started downloading more info. Now this is a little unusual for me. Most games I've played, once loaded, you can start playing. Not this one.
The stuff being downloaded was a decrypter. OK. Security on a game like this makes sense. They want to make sure it is a bona-fide bought game before they will let you play it. I can live with that.
What I had a hard time with is that when you go to load the game to play it, it goes out to the game site and runs on-line. Now why spend all that time with a disk if you have to play on-line?
It seems screwy and I am still trying to figure out the whole bit, but it has to "ping" the companies site first for upgrades and downloads. After that, if you want to play it stand alone, you have to disconnect your Internet connection. It will then ask if you want to continue playing "offline".
I am still figuring out all the quirks with this thing. But from what I've seen so far, the graphics are very good and smooth. It appears to be a lot more involved than the first game, so that is a good thing as well. When I get further into it, I'll have a better opinion.
Still, it bothers me that it has to "ping" the home site every time you play it.
Security happens. (I guess)
