So far I have been enjoying DOOM 3. It has a lot of the stuff that makes a game good: action, thought, a need for attention (on the players part), a good sense of direction, and a willingness to get killed and redo an area. It also has a bunch of twists and turns to keep you from getting bored.
One of the features about it is the "surprise" happenings. When you are least expecting it, "things" happen that catch you unawares. Being in an area where you are already absorbed by the action, waiting for the next attack, "stuff" happens that makes you wonder if you just lost your video card, locked up the computer, or ruined some other peice of hardware. Then "WHAM", the surprise will hit you. Sometimes it is a silly thing that you wouldn't even concider happening in a game (no, I won't tell you. You have to play the game to find out. If you're a gamer, you'll appreciate it.).
Other times, the surprise makes total sense in the flow of the game.
Having replayed several areas, mostly from my character getting killed, I've looked for the "trigger" to some events; amount of time, placement in the scene, use of different equipment, stuff like that. So far, I haven't figured out what triggers a lot of the happenings. That is good as it keeps the game fresh.
If you're into games, this is a good one so far.
Suspense happens.
