We recently received another promotion concerning DSL High Speed Internet Provider Service, courtesy fo our phone provider. Most people would naturaly be excited about this as it offers special rates.
I have a problem though...
for three years, I have been researching both cable and DSL services. Both have their good points and their bad points. I am not here to go over the various differences. Only one (1)( as in "uno")( as in less than "2"), and that is availability.
After they pushed the DSL side of things for a period of time, and wanting to see what there was other than "dail-up", and cable, I started asking questions about the whole program.
It sounded good, and the price was much lower than cable. Great. Where do I need to go to sign up?
"Nowhere."
"???" "Say what?" I go 'NOWHERE' to sign up?
"It's not available in your area yet."
"Oh. How soon?"
"No idea."
Wonderful. All that hype, and no connection. At least I won't have to worry about a busy signal.
So, when I got this Promo, I couldn't help calling. (We've had cable for almost a year now.) I expected to be told, ONCE AGAIN, that it wasn't available in our area yet. (even though one of the people at work has had it for almost two years. And they live in a trailer park, for goodness sake.)
Anyway, I was surprised to here that it IS available in our area now. Problem is, it is only at a transfer rate of 384 kb. They hope that in a years time to get a relay station up and running in the area. Once that is going, we can "UPGRADE" to a "professional" package. that package will allow transfer rates of, (now this is their words, not mine), 1.5 - 3.0 mbs.
NOW THAT IS SCREAMING. Of course you will pay for the "professional" package. But if they quoted the price correctly, it will be cheaper than our current cable hook up. But, cable is talking about a speed upgrade as well. Could be interesting in the next couple months.
Speed happens (supposedly).
I hope that in a year's time we win Powerball - doesn't mean it will happen though (although it might, if we ever play).
I wouldn't mind a little competition here - we aren't close enough to a switching station to get DSL so we have to take whatever the cable will give us.

Yeah, us to at the moment. We can get the slow stuff but not the fast yet. I plan on writing an update to this sometime Sat. or Sun. Stay tuned.
