Wrestler Hulk Hogan turns 50 today.
Yes, I like wrestling. It is a full weeks worth of action, drama, humor, stupidity, story lines and "reality" TV wrapped up in an hour. Even though most of the action is staged and scripted, you have to give most of these people credit for their athletic abilities.
Try running around in a 16' X 16' area for 15 minutes, falling down, getting up and starting over again. Can we say "cardio-vascular?" And as far as the falls go, yeah they practise them and know how to do them but think about what they do. The posts are about five and a half feet up, they are 6+ feet tall, and they climb up and jump off and don't kill themselves. OK, so they are Darwin Award wannabe's. Think of the survival rate YOU might have just from jumping off your kitchen counter, though most of us prefer to think we're smarter than that. Hey, for what these people make, I'd give it a try, once.
One of the people I work with has family in the wrestling lifestyle and I have known a few wrestlers in my time as well. I can tell you they probably spend more time in the gym working out and practicing than any other athelete I can think of. They are in the ring on a regular basis all year long, no off season. And, the things they do can, and will, kill you if done wrong. What is scary is that a lot of the moves they do on TV will actually do what they say they are supposed to do. Sleeper holds and submission moves work.
People like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair are remarkable in the fact they survived so long and can still wrestle or even walk. Even if you want to call it "Wraslin'", you still have to give these people credit for the condition they are in.
Amazing what a rock and roll bass player turned into.
Happy Birthday Hulk!
